Every Anthropic Claude Messages API response returns a stop_reason field. In our production systems at ZeroShot Studio, ignoring this field is one of the most common causes of subtle data corruption. When Claude stops generating because it hit max_tokens, the output is not a complete response. It is a truncated string that ends mid-sentence, mid-word, or mid-JSON-key. If your code assumes every 200 OK response represents a finished turn, your downstream parsers will crash on incomplete payloads.

max_tokenson every request. If you omitmax_tokens, the API returns an HTTP 400 Bad Request error stating that the field is missing.
- How do I know if Claude was cut off mid-word?
When
stop_reason == "max_tokens", the model halts token generation immediately after reaching the limit. Because tokens often represent word fragments or syllables, the final characters inresponse.content[0].textmay be a partial word or incomplete code token.
- Does stop_sequence consume tokens?
Yes. The tokens generated up until and including the matched stop sequence are generated by the model and billed in
usage.output_tokens. However, the API strips the matched stop sequence string from the returned response text.
- Can Claude return multiple stop reasons in one response?
No. The
